Working here
A three storey townhouse is mostly stairs
Newer Markham townhouses stack the rooms: a ground floor entry, living space above it, bedrooms above that. The carpet is on two or three flights of stairs, the landings and the bedrooms, with hard flooring everywhere else. Stairs are slow work. Each tread and riser is done with a hand tool, because a full size wand will not sit flat on a step. So a townhouse with three bedrooms can take longer than a bungalow with five, and stairs are quoted on their own.
In Cornell the way in is from the lane
Cornell and some of the newer streets near it were laid out with garages on a rear lane and no driveway at the front. If we arrive at the front door there may be nowhere to stop. Tell us if your house backs onto a lane, and whether the garage is attached or sits across a yard, so the van goes to the right side and the hose is the right length. It saves a quarter of the morning.
A shoes-off house soils differently
Where nobody wears outdoor shoes inside, there is very little grit in the carpet. What builds up is finer: skin oils from bare feet and socks, cooking residue that settles from the air, dust. It shows as a dull grey cast on a pale carpet, heaviest in front of the sofa and beside the beds. It responds well to extraction, because it is sitting on the fibre and has not cut into it.

Two generations of housing
Markham was built in two long waves, and the carpet tells you which one you are standing in. Through Unionville, Milliken and the Markham side of Thornhill the detached houses date from the years when broadloom went through the living room, the dining room, the hall and every bedroom. Some of that carpet has been replaced with hardwood on the main floor. Upstairs, plenty of the original is still down, and it has had decades of use.
The later wave is in the east and north: Cornell, Berczy Village, Wismer Commons, Greensborough. Lots are narrower, townhouses are common and many are three storeys tall. Hard flooring covers the main level and the carpet is confined to the stairs and the bedrooms. There is less of it by area and more of it by effort, because stairs take time.
Access differs too. An older Unionville house has a driveway and a front door a few steps from it. In Cornell the garage is often on a lane behind the house, so the van and the hose come in from the back. Condos near the town centre mean a booked lift and a portable machine.
How the clean goes
We pre-spray, give it time to work, then push hot water into the pile and draw it straight back out with the soil. On open floor that is a wand in slow overlapping passes. On stairs it is a hand tool on every tread, riser and edge. We finish with dry passes so the carpet is damp, not wet, when we leave.
Drying takes four to six hours with the windows open or the furnace fan on. Bedrooms done in the morning are ready by evening. The solutions are eco-friendly and safe around children and pets once the pile is dry.
Small to medium rooms are $40 to $60 each. Large rooms are measured at $0.25 to $0.50 a square foot, a three to five room house runs $200 to $1,000 or more, and the minimum service fee is $100 to $150. Our cleaners are insured and background-checked.

Asked in Markham
How much does it cost to clean the carpet on three flights of townhouse stairs?
Stairs are quoted separately from rooms, because they are done by hand one step at a time, and we give you that figure once we know how many flights and landings there are. Bedrooms are $40 to $60 each at small to medium size, and the minimum service fee is $100 to $150. The price is confirmed before work starts.
Our Unionville house still has the original carpet. Is it worth cleaning or should we replace it?
Clean it once before deciding. If the carpet is dull and grey but the pile still stands up, extraction usually brings it back a long way. If the backing has gone stiff, the seams are lifting or the pile is worn flat in the doorways, cleaning will not fix that, and we will tell you on the day.
We do not wear shoes indoors. Does the carpet still need professional cleaning?
Less often, but yes. A shoes-off house keeps grit out, which is the thing that wears carpet fastest. Oils from feet, cooking vapour and fine dust still settle into the pile and slowly turn a pale carpet grey. A household vacuum does not lift oil. Hot water extraction does, and the difference shows most in the bedrooms.
