A runner on a wood staircase is cleaned differently
A stair runner leaves bare wood showing on both sides of every tread, and that wood has a finish that does not like standing water. So a runner is cleaned with a hand tool and very little solution, working down from the top, and each step is wiped at the edges before we move to the next. On a curved staircase the treads are wedge shaped and no two are the same width, which is another reason it is hand work and another reason it takes time.
We look at a rug before we wet it
The houses in Bayview Hill and around Mill Pond often have good rugs in them, and good rugs vary. A machine made synthetic rug can be extracted in place without much risk. A hand knotted wool rug may have dyes that run, and a viscose or silk pile can be marked by water alone. We check the fibre, the backing and the fringe, and test a corner for colour. If a rug should not be wet cleaned on your floor, we tell you and leave it.
Pale bedroom carpet shows everything
Upstairs carpet in these houses tends to be pale and plush. It is comfortable and it hides nothing. The typical Richmond Hill job is not a house full of broadloom. In Bayview Hill, Doncrest and Jefferson the houses are large and detached, the main floor is hardwood or stone, and the soft surfaces are a runner on the main staircase, rugs in the living and dining rooms, and fitted carpet in the bedrooms. So most of what we clean here is sitting on a floor that water can harm. That decides the method. Rugs and runners get a hand tool, a light application and several dry strokes, and we lift a corner of a rug afterwards to check the floor under it is dry. A rug with no pad on a finished wood floor is moved or propped at one edge so air can get beneath it.
Upstairs is ordinary hot water extraction: pre-spray, dwell, hot water in and straight back out, then dry passes. Bedrooms take four to six hours to dry with some air moving.
North of the old town, in Oak Ridges and Westbrook, the houses are newer and there is often a finished basement with fitted carpet as well. That carpet sits on a slab and dries more slowly than the bedrooms, so we do it first and leave air moving across it while we work upstairs.

A three to five room house is $200 to $1,000 or more, and the minimum service fee is $100 to $150, which matters if the job is a pair of rugs and nothing else. Can you clean a stair runner without damaging the hardwood on either side?
Yes. A runner is cleaned with a small hand tool that puts down far less water than a floor wand and takes it straight back up. We work one step at a time and wipe the exposed wood at the edges as we go. The runner is left damp, not wet, so nothing sits on the finish.
Do you clean wool or silk area rugs at the house?
Many wool rugs, yes, after testing a corner to see that the dyes hold. Silk and viscose are different, because water alone can mark the pile, and we would sooner decline than risk it. We look at the fibre, backing and fringe first and tell you honestly whether cleaning it in place is sensible.
What causes the dark lines along the edge of our bedroom carpet?
They are filtration lines. Air moving under a closed door or through the gap at a baseboard passes through the carpet edge, and the pile traps the fine dust it carries. It is very fine soil and it bonds tightly. Extraction with extra attention to the edge lightens it, but on a pale carpet a faint line often remains.
