Hard water and carpet that greys again
York Region classifies Newmarket's tap water as hard. It is blended from Lake Ontario and groundwater, and it carries enough mineral to matter. Shampoo a carpet with hard water and a heavy dose of detergent, then leave it to dry without rinsing, and the residue stays in the pile and grabs the next lot of dirt. That is the usual reason a carpet looks fine for a week and then dull again. We rinse the solution back out and finish with dry passes, so as little as possible is left behind.
Flats above the shops on Main Street
Main Street is a heritage conservation district, and many of its old brick buildings have a flat or an office upstairs. That is a different job from a subdivision house. There is no drive for the van, the stairs are narrow and often turn, and the hose has to go up them. Original carpet in the newer subdivisions
Glenway Estates is mostly two-storey houses from the 1990s and 2000s, and much of the west side follows the same pattern. The pattern is hardwood or laminate downstairs and broadloom on the stairs and in the bedrooms. If that carpet came with the house, it has been down a long time, and the stair nosings and the strip outside each bedroom door will be flattened and grey. Extraction lifts the soil. It does not stand flattened pile back up, and we say so before we start.
Three kinds of house in one town
Newmarket grew in stages, and the carpet follows the stages. The old town sits on the East Holland River, around the mill pond that is now Fairy Lake, which is why the oldest streets are east of Yonge and not on it. Near the core, in Central Newmarket and Gorham-College Manor, there are postwar bungalows, where any carpet may be on the main floor as well as the bedrooms. From the 1980s the town became a commuter town and grew fast, which brought side-splits and two-storeys. Glenway and Summerhill are newer still, with carpet only on the stairs and upstairs.

Can you clean a Persian rug at our house in Newmarket?
Often, yes, but we decide after looking, not before. A hand knotted wool rug is checked for loose dyes by wetting a hidden corner, and the fringe and backing are checked too. If the colour moves, or the rug is silk or viscose, we will not wet clean it on your floor and we tell you that plainly. A machine made rug is usually straightforward.
We used a rental machine and the carpet looks worse. Can that be fixed?
Usually. Rental machines put down a lot of water and detergent and pull back much less of either, so the pile is left sticky and it soils quickly. With hard water in the mix the residue builds faster. A proper extraction rinses that out. If the underlay stayed wet for days afterwards and there is a smell, tell us, because that is a different problem.
Can you do the sofa while you are there?
Yes, and it saves a second trip. We read the cleaning code on the sofa's label first, because some fabrics take water and some do not, and we test a hidden spot. Most fabric sofas can be extracted in place. The cushions dry in a few hours with air moving through the room.
