Mattress deep cleaning

You wash the sheets every week. Nobody washes the mattress.

Deep cleaning for mattresses in Toronto and the GTA. Sweat, skin, mite debris and set-in stains pulled out of the surface with heat and suction, not sprayed over.

What is actually living in there

A sleeping adult loses close to half a litre of moisture a night and sheds skin the whole time. Both go downward, into foam or into a spring unit, and neither comes back out on its own. That is the food supply for dust mites, which live on shed skin rather than on people, and it explains a blocked nose at two in the morning that clears an hour after you get up.

So the thing we take out of a mattress is rarely dirt in the way a carpet is dirty. It is body oil, dried sweat salts, skin, mite debris, and whatever was spilled on it before you owned the sheets that are covering it now. None of it shows from standing height. Almost all of it sits in the top few centimetres of the surface, which is exactly as deep as extraction reaches.

Why spraying something on it does not work

Fabric sprays and steamers put moisture in and leave it there. That is the wrong direction. Every gram of water that goes into a mattress has to come back out the same minute, under suction, or it sits in the foam and becomes a smell in a fortnight. Our machine puts in less water than a household steam cleaner and removes far more of it, and the recovery tank shows you what came with it.

Pillows, headboards, divan bases and upholstered bed frames hold the same material and are quick to add once we are in the room. Children's mattresses and anything in a basement bedroom are usually the worst two in the house.

Price and the one condition we ask for

A mattress is quoted per item, by size and by condition, and the price is confirmed before the machine is switched on. Minimum service fee is $100 to $150, because the van and the setup cost the same for one mattress as for four, so most people book the whole house at once or add a sofa.

The one condition is drying time. A mattress must be fully dry before anyone sleeps on it, and that is a matter of hours rather than minutes. Morning appointments are better than evening ones for that reason. If someone in the house has asthma or an allergy, say so when you book, and we will tell you exactly what we are putting on the bed.

How it goes

The order of work.

01

Strip and inspect

Bedding off, then we read the label and look at the seams, the piping and every stain. We tell you which ones will lift and which ones will only lighten.

02

Dry vacuum, surface and seams

A slow HEPA pass over the top, the sides and into the piping, where skin and mite debris collect and a household vacuum never goes.

03

Enzyme pre-treat

Protein stains need an enzyme and they need time. Sweat, blood and urine are broken down chemically before anything tries to rinse them out.

04

Low moisture extraction

Heated solution in, immediately drawn back out under suction. A mattress gets a fraction of the water a carpet does, because foam holds what it is given.

05

Dry strokes and air movement

Repeat passes with suction only, then air movers and an open window to carry the last of the moisture off.

Polythene sheeting draped over a window and floor with a wrapped stepladder in a stripped white room
Sheeting down first. The frame, the floor and anything beside the bed stay dry while we work.
A furnished lounge with sage walls, a brown daybed and a green patterned rug on wood flooring
Sofas, daybeds and armchairs run on the same equipment, so they are worth adding to the same visit.
An empty bright room with pale strip wood flooring and full height glazed doors onto a balcony
Heat does most of the work. On a mattress we keep the heat and cut the water right down.

Asked often

About this job.

Every question we get
How long before I can sleep on it?

Plan on four to eight hours with a window open and the air movers running. Book it for a day you are out of the house. Sleeping on a mattress that is still damp inside undoes the job and invites mould into the foam, so we would rather reschedule than rush you.

Will old stains come out?

Fresh protein stains usually go completely. Something that soaked through and dried two years ago will lighten, sometimes a lot, but the fibres may be dyed by now. We will tell you which category yours is in before we start rather than after we invoice.

Do you clean both sides?

Yes, if the mattress can be turned safely and there is room to do it. Single sided pillow tops and anything too heavy to flip get the sleeping surface and the sides instead.

Can you get rid of bed bugs?

No, and be careful of anyone who says they can with a cleaning machine. Bed bugs are a pest control job. We can clean a mattress after treatment, and if we see signs of them we will tell you what we are looking at.

Tell us the square footage. We will tell you the price.
