What carpet cleaning can and cannot remove

A yes, partly and no table for the things people hope a carpet clean will fix, with the Health Canada advice on pests and mould, and an honest line on where the machine stops being the answer.

Hot water extraction removes soil, most spills, pet dander and much of the allergen load in the pile, and it reduces odours that sit in the fibre. It helps against fleas and dust mites but does not replace treating the pet or the house. It is not bed bug treatment, and it does not fix mould in the underlay.

That is the short version. The longer one is a table, because most of the disappointment in this trade comes from people booking a clean for something a clean was never going to do.

What comes out of a carpet, and what does not?

Hot water extraction is very good at anything that is sitting in the pile and will dissolve, loosen or rinse. It is poor at anything that has changed the fibre itself, and it does nothing for problems that live under the carpet or in the rest of the house.

TargetComes out?Why
Grit and everyday soilYesLoose soil at the base of the pile rinses out and goes to the recovery tank.
Fresh spills (coffee, juice, food)Yes, usuallyCaught early, before they dry or wick down, most lift completely.
Pet hair and dander in the pileYesPre-vacuuming and extraction pull it out of the fibre.
Dust and allergens in the pilePartlyA lot comes out, but the carpet keeps collecting more from the room.
Odours in the fibreMostlySmells held in the pile rinse out. Smells in the pad do not.
Old set-in stainsPartlyThey often lighten. Some have dyed the fibre and stay.
Pet urine in the backing or padPartlyNeeds targeted treatment, and sometimes a pad replacement.
FleasPartlyHelps, alongside treating the pet and the house.
Dust mitesPartlyReduces them for a while. Humidity control matters more.
Bed bugsNoA pest control job.
Mould in the underlayNoThe pad has to come out and the moisture source fixed.
Bleach, paint and dye damageNoThat is colour loss or added colour, not soil.
Burns, sun fading, wearNoThe fibre itself is damaged.

If the reason you want the carpet cleaned is in the "yes" column, book it. If it is in the "no" column, we will tell you so on the phone rather than take the job.

Where does cleaning help, and what else is needed?

Cleaning helps with fleas, dust mites, allergens and set-in odours, but in each case it is one part of the fix, not all of it.

Fleas. Health Canada's page on fleas is clear that if your pet has fleas, you treat the pet and the areas it uses. Its list for the house includes vacuuming carpets and cushioned furniture daily, washing pet and family bedding in hot, soapy water, and steam cleaning carpets. If the problem persists, it says to call a licensed pest control operator. A carpet clean fits inside that plan. On its own, with an untreated dog lying on the sofa, it buys you a short break before the next round hatches.

Dust mites. Health Canada's dust and dust mites page says mites live in beds, carpets, furniture and soft toys, and that both dust and mites can cause allergic reactions and aggravate asthma. Its advice is frequent vacuuming with a HEPA filter, keeping indoor humidity in a moderate range, and considering hard flooring. There is some research on heat: a small 1995 study by Colloff and colleagues in Clinical and Experimental Allergy (PubMed) tested a domestic steam cleaner on test carpet squares and in one flat, and reported that it killed mites and cut the main mite allergen. It was a small study, and it used true steam, not the hot water extraction most carpet cleaners mean when they say "steam cleaning." Read it as a reason cleaning helps, not as a promise.

Allergens generally. A deep clean takes out what has built up at the base of the pile, where an upright vacuum does not reach. Then the room starts loading the carpet again. How often to repeat it is covered in how often you should have carpets cleaned.

Odours. Smells that sit in the fibre, such as cooking, smoke or a damp dog, mostly rinse out. Pet urine is different, because it goes down through the backing into the pad. Why that matters, and what treating it properly involves, is in how to get pet urine smell out of carpet.

What is a job for someone else?

Bed bugs, mould in the underlay, and colour damage are not cleaning jobs, and anyone who takes your money for them with a carpet machine is guessing.

Bed bugs. Health Canada's guide, Bedbugs: how do I get rid of them?, strongly recommends hiring a licensed professional pest control operator. It does list steaming and vacuuming among the physical methods, including vacuuming rugs and carpet, but says any treatment only works if physical control and prevention are used together. That is a pest control programme, run by someone licensed to run it. We can clean a mattress or a carpet after treatment, and our mattress deep cleaning page says the same thing in its own FAQ. If we see signs of bed bugs during a job, we will tell you what we are looking at.

Mould in the underlay. Health Canada's guide to addressing moisture and mould indoors says carpets and underpads that are mouldy should be cut out and discarded, and the surface underneath cleaned and dried. It also says mould will come back unless the cause of the moisture is found and fixed. Extraction on top of a mouldy pad puts more water into the problem. If a carpet has been wet for a while, how long it takes mould to grow after water damage explains the timeline, and the job becomes water damage work, not a carpet clean.

Colour damage, burns and wear. Bleach takes dye out. Nail polish, paint and hair dye put colour in. Sun fades it. Traffic wears the fibre down. None of that is soil, so none of it rinses out. Spot dyeing and patching are repair trades.

The next step

Tell us what you want the clean to fix when you call 647-697-7435, or request a free quote. If it is in the "yes" or "partly" column, we will explain what the visit can do and confirm the price before work starts. If it is in the "no" column, you will hear that first. AllCleaner's carpet cleaning is hot water extraction with a dry vacuum pass first and pre-treatment on traffic lanes and spots, using eco-friendly solutions that are safe around children and pets once dry.

Short answers.

Should I clean the carpets before or after a flea treatment?
Ask whoever is doing the treatment, and read the product label, because some treatments are meant to stay in the carpet for a while and a wet clean can take them out early. Health Canada's flea advice pairs treating the pet and the house with daily vacuuming and steam cleaning of carpets, so the cleaning has a place. The timing is the operator's call.
Will carpet cleaning help my allergies?
It can help, because hot water extraction pulls out dust, dander and soil that a household vacuum leaves at the base of the pile. It does not cure an allergy, and the effect fades as the carpet loads up again. Health Canada's advice on dust mites is frequent vacuuming with a HEPA filter and keeping indoor humidity down, with cleaning as one part of that.
Can cleaning remove a smell that is in the underlay?
Not from the surface. If urine or water has soaked through the backing into the pad, the smell lives below where a cleaning wand reaches. Targeted flushing and extraction sometimes gets it. When the pad is saturated or has gone mouldy, that section of underlay has to be cut out and replaced.
